Guiller Negative 08: A Personal Perspective

Written by Craig Stewart
Guillermo Y Compania materialized in the dreams of friendship and competitive fair play. We are college players from Nashville, TN, but we attend different schools across the country. We've played together growing up, forming a team with dirrrtay break throws, a merciless sky patrol, and a foundation of love.
-
When we initially addressed the regional rostering requirements, we received the go-ahead to proceed with our roster intact. However, devastation rocked the Guiller dream when less than a week before sectionals, the UPA confirmed that we had to remove 8 players from our roster to avoid team disqualification.
-
Given a list of my 13 best friends in the world, I had to tell 8 of them they couldn't play anymore. Having already poured their lives into this team, purchasing jerseys and plane tickets, the following 8 players were asked to sit this season out. They bleed Guiller love, and they deserve some special recognition for making the biggest sacrifice to the team: walking away so the rest of us can still compete.

Alex Treyz, Edward Linton, Katie Patterson, Jake Wright, Matt Baum, Robert Runner, Tyler Conger, and Will DeLoache.

These people mean a lot to me and GYC as a whole.

Will DeLoache and I as freshmen at Davidson College (pictured with Jeff Yeakel).

Matt Baum and I goofing off at Phi Beta Kommons Semi Formal. Check the uniforms, especially the nasty triceratops chain.

---------------------

Tyler Conger - Junior, UVA
I met Tyler at Nashville Summer league, and he has quickly become one of my favorite players to compete with. I love playing with the Congstar, because he's such a level-headed handler and clever cutter.

Robert Runner - Senior, UVA
I competed against Robert in juniors ultimate while he played for Atlanta's Woodward Academy. We had great battles marking up on eachother in HS and college before finally sharing the same line in Nashville. Robert is captain of UVA's Night Train.

Edward Linton - Sophomore, University of Pennsylvania
I taught edward how to play ultimate when he was a freshman at University school of Nashville. Brother of fellow Guiller baller Sam, SmackRae is known for his ridonk layout Ds and relentless tenacity.

Jake Wright - Senior, Wake Forest
Jake and I have been friends since we were 13 years old. We learned how to play ultimate together at our high school intramurals program in the 9th grade, and we've competed as college rivals since then. Hold on to your Butts.

Matt Baum - Junior, Davidson College -- Will DeLoache - Senior, Davidson College

Matt is my roommate. He has only played ultimate for 2 years, so his potential matches his jumping ability: boundless.

Our team was named for Will DeLoache in January 2007. Will is my oldest ultimate frisbee friend, and we are now captains together at Davidson College. Will plays with unrivaled intensity, and GYC has never lost a game with Will on the field.

Katie Patterson - First Year, UC Boulder Law, Vandy Graduate
Katie built VUDU, the Vanderbilt Women's team from the ground up. Achieving All-region honors in 2008, Katie is a defensive stunna. Also, GYC trivia-- she's Will Deloache's cousin.

Alex Treyz - Senior, Davidson College
Alex blew my mind when she executed an absurd layout grab on the first day she had ever played ultimate. Since then she has blossomed into a phenomenal player, as she will be leading Davidson's women's team this year. Alex is my Frowg-Dowg.
